When Mike and I used the pedipaw nail filer on Jake, I thought I was going to die of scratches. I don’t know why but it made his claws lethal. We had to go back and cut them like normal. In fact if we do not time his eating with our eating perfectly, we will have the music of Jake’s barking throughout the entire meal. We have tried several things including completely ignoring him, but he still barks. Jake even has three or four different barks. Some are playful and some mean business. Some sound like he is a puppy and some sound like he is a huge dog. He usually uses the puppy one for when we are eating and the huge dog one for the bathtub. Yes Jake barks at the bathtub. This interesting occurrence is still a mystery to us. Is there something on the bathtub that he can’t reach so he just barks at it? Or does he just not like the idea of the bathtub because it is somewhere we go every day where he can see us but not reach us? Those theories are nice but I prefer to think that he barks at the bathtub because he thinks it is a huge water bowl that won’t fill up high enough for him to get a drink.
Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-85473464643207625282010-03-13T19:10:00.001-08:002010-03-16T19:57:20.898-07:00Popular Puppy is Boring...Really!
So in the beginning wherever we went, people would swoon over Jake saying how cute he is and asking what breed he is. Each person took about 2 minutes of my time, give or take. What I want to know is when that will stop! At first I must say it was fun. I loved telling the whole story of Jake and letting him get a little socialization, but now I just want to get places. Jake has caused me to meet some interesting people… Petco worker who uncomfortably knows where I live because he watches me walk my dog and informed me of this, a very negative woman who we met on a walk who I think has had every terrible thing in this world happen to her and she shared it within the first 5 minutes of me meeting her, and lastly a guy on the trail who asked me to come over to his house because he has a Siberian husky and his roommate has a German shepherd and that would be so cool. Right umm I don’t go home with strangers. Gosh… why did my parents have to teach me that! I have tried everything to get people to stop talking to me when I take Jake on walks such as walking fast and making no eye contact, plugging in my ipod, and carrying a mean look on my face. Nothing works, people will interrupt me and make me stop to talk to them. Of course Jake doesn’t help, as soon as he sees someone coming, he loosens his face, wags his butt (that’s right, not just his tail but his whole butt), and sticks his ears back to make him look as adorable as can be. I counted how many times I had to stop for people on my walk today… Fifteen times! So if I average about 2 minutes for each person or set of people I stop for, that is 30 minutes out of our hour and a half walk just on socializing. Sometimes they don’t even pet him, they just want to talk. Oh and did I forget to mention that Jake struggles on walks, I have to drag him half the time. Luckily we are starting training next week so hopefully she will have some guidance on this. So my advice for anyone who is looking into getting a puppy…don’t get one that is too cute J
Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-85573068321289761382010-03-10T09:31:00.000-08:002010-03-10T09:32:17.037-08:00Camping
I know that I have been a terrible blogger and I am very sorry about this. Mike and I like to think of this trip as our last outing together before he started his new job that had him up at 1am every morning. And when Mike gets up, Jake gets up. I’ll let you assume what you like about how my sleep schedule has been.

Jake really enjoyed camping. Of course the coolness outside was wonderful for Jake, he slept like a baby until we were all woken up at 6:30am by the camp’s next to us car alarm going off. Jake got lots of attention from the two boy scout troops staying at the camp ground with us. They took turns practicing sit with Jake. I am not sure that it really helped his understanding of the word, but it was so cute, I couldn’t bear to tell them to stop. Jake spent most of the time camping being terrified of the tent, we would have to pick him up and bring him into the tent and hold on to him inside to get him to realize it was our temporary home. With his fear of the tent, he spent the majority of the time outside the tend and found his new love for digging… Now whenever we are outside, Jake is digging. This is one habit that we are hoping he grows out of. The lady on the show “Its me or the dog” says that digging is due to a lack of exercise but we take him for an hour to hour and a half walk/ jog every day. Camping was definitely fun and Jake made it a little more interesting for us. I think we will do this again and maybe next time we will go fishing too!

I am pleased to announce that Jake has learned sit, lay down, and paw (shaking our hand). Hopefully within a week or two we will have this down. We are also struggling quite a bit with the biting thing. I actually am really embarrassed because I kept calling one of them and she finally called me back. She was sick and could barely talk, that’s why she was not calling me back and I felt terrible. I really like this training facility, Urban Tails, though because they have a swimming pool where you can teach your dog to swim and they have a function on their website where you can go and watch a live video feed of the facility. That way when I have to leave Jake there, I can go and watch his progress and what is really going on there. The training supervisor said that we could get started immediately, but after thinking about it, I am going to wait until Jake gets his third round of boosters. I would also like to go see their facility and meet them before I get tied down to a situation I don’t know anything about.

Jake has started some new habits (although I can’t blame it all on him I have to admit). One is that apparently Jake’s whining in the middle of the night was bothering our neighbors so we moved his crate into the bathroom, well then we let him sleep on our bed once because we were both so tired, we couldn’t bear to be up with him for an hour in the middle of the night. Well now somehow he has been sleeping with us on our bed every night since we got back from Dad’s. I know many of you are saying “WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!!” What can I say, I love having the little guy close. He doesn’t go potty on the bed (at least not yet). He wakes up and gets us up. We take him to the potty pad for him to do his business and then we all go back to sleep, much better than playing for an hour at 2am.

Another lovely habit he has started is sitting down to pee. He actually puts bum to ground and does his business. Well this habit has started the constant worry for Mike and I that every time he sits, he is peeing. We are constantly jumping up for no reason… “Don’t worry, he is just sitting this time.” I hope he grows out of this one.

The last habit and certainly not the best is that he has started bringing our dirty under ware to us to play with. The sight of little Jake trotting across the floor with my under ware in his mouth is very unsettling I must say. Of course this is one of those times when I should be getting a stack of newspapers, rolling them up, wrapping a rubber band around them, hitting myself over the head, and say “ummm hello, what did you expect when you left them somewhere he could get them!” I was warned about this habit from my friend Alexandra who had to buy under ware every week when he dog would find them and rip them up. I hope I grow out of this one and start watching where I put that personal item from now on… IE behind a closed door!

In other news… We have created a twitter account for Jake. Jake was out of the woods and ready for action! The one downside however was that the DNA test that we were told would cost $60 apparently costs $185!! What! No we will not pay that! Never fear though, we found a much cheaper option online that is being shipped to us and we will be able to get this sorted out in less than a month. Yay! Also in a month, Jake will be long done with his third round of boosters and we will be in the clear as far as that goes.

The weekend went great although Jake had some potty problems. We were proactive though and had pulled up all the rugs so we didn’t have any major oops.As some of you might have read on Jenny’s blog, with all the snow this weekend, we had to push our cars up the hill to dad’s house. This was kind of fun for all of us but not fun for Jake, who really needed to potty after the long car trip. He was crying the entire time. I felt bad for the little guy. Jake was greeted with warm and friendly arms this weekend. It was nice to see how my family thinks he is as cool as I do. He is a very cool dog, and not just because he is the cutest puppy ever!

Jake loved playing in the snow. Of course he has to be in the moment in order to follow the orders, if he is wrapped up in his toys, food, sleeping, or water, he will not follow the commands. However, if we can get his attention and he knows we have something he wants (ie toy or treats), then he is the perfect student! Sometimes I think that Jake and I have similar characteristics in that way. I need pretty perfect accommodations in order to be the perfect student in my fullest capacity.

Jake has also become more comfortable with going on walks; in fact he whines and stares out the window longingly. I think it is just because he wants to see the giant water bowl or maybe he needs a certain amount of fresh air a day. We have come a long way from that first night when he could hardly walk. He still doesn’t like the leash much and is scared to go down the stairs, but we will work on it. I can see how it would look scary to a little pup.

If the vet gives us the go ahead tomorrow, we are venturing to dad’s this weekend so Jake can meet the family including Capri! Also, on Sunday we are going to go into Dallas so that Jake can play with Atticus (Alexandra’s dog) and Lucy (John’s dog). I really hope we get the go ahead from the vet because I want to socialize Jake and until he is completely vaccinated, I won’t be able to have him around dogs I don’t know. He likes smaller dogs but is scared of big dogs, which isn’t surprising. I wish that my friends had bigger dogs. HMM… Also at the vet tomorrow we are going to get the test that will tell us what breeds Jake is mixed with. We are really excited! If you haven’t told us what you think, then you need to hurry up and guess. So far we have had guesses of Siberian husky with these types… Border Collie, German Shepherd, Chow, Rottweiler, Lab, and Saint Bernard (I sure hope not). My guess is that he is Siberian Husky with Chow and German Shepherd. Mike’s is Siberian Husky with German Shepherd. That was my original guess but his face structure and ears look like Chow to me. We should know in about 3 weeks I think.
Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-69047189296890770622010-02-07T19:27:00.001-08:002010-02-07T19:39:33.899-08:00Puppy's First Bath

We gave Jake his first bath tonight and besides the little whining, he seemed to enjoy himself!

He is such a cutie isn't he? It started with Mike getting up early to take care of Jake so I could sleep in. My sleeping in of course is not the same for most people. I got to sleep until 8:30, which feels like 11am to those of us with puppies that get up at 2am and 5am every night. So this morning I decided to give back and let Mike sleep in late. Notice that it is 9:50 and he is still sleeping, needless to say I am jealous.

Mike and I had the perfect Saturday. Now saying this, I realize that it is probably dull and incredibly boring to most of you. After I woke up late, Mike and I took Jake for a walk to our kolache place and got some breakfast. Jake was so excited that he was practically running the entire time. As we walked out of the apartment, Jake saw the large fountain and immediately started licking his lips. I’m pretty sure he thought it was a large water bowl. I can’t even imagine how exciting that would be for a little puppy. As we continued to the Kolache place, Jake got lots of attention. He is still that cute little puppy that everyone wants to pet and love on. I feel lucky that I get to love on him whenever I want. Then I watched a couple lifetime movies. At 3 o’clock the Mizzou basketball game came on so Mike and I watched that (I will admit I snoozed a little, still being tired) then went to dinner at our favorite Mexican food place. No matter what I get at this place, I always love it. We had great conversations then spent the rest of the night wandering Barnes And Noble. We made it home just in time to play with Jake a bit and then go to bed. I know…very boring and not worth the title of best Saturday, but to me an uneventful day such as that was just what the doctor ordered! Now today is Superbowl Sunday so lets hope that it is just as uneventful as yesterday so I can get some work done and maybe fit in a little nap.

An update on Jake: He seems to be pulling through his health issues that were so alarming to me at first. He is happy and playful. His potty training is still a struggle. He sometimes pees on the potty pad and sometimes doesn’t. He always poops right next to the potty pad but not on it, which makes clean up difficult. We try to get to him as fast as possible and stick the pad under him so we can catch it. He has finally learned how to hold his bone and chew. I think we are going to have to upgrade though because he is going through his puppy bones like crazy. We are also upgrading his food to large breed puppy food, but after looking at the pellets I’m kind of nervous. They are two times the size of the puppy food we were feeding him. Jake has also taken up a new hobby of pulling his bed across the room. You know, that’s what beds are for…not sleeping…pulling J
Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-4372140980427566932010-02-03T09:40:00.000-08:002010-02-03T16:16:25.727-08:00My sick puppyJake has had a rocky few days. We have been in and out of the vet and he is now taking five medications, including the one he was already taking for his pyroderma. Monday night, we realized that Jake has a runny nose and is sneezing so I took him in to the vet yesterday morning and she warned me that a lot of SPCA dogs have been coming down with distemper. Distemper is definitely not a disease you want your dog to have (not that you want your dog to have any disease) because there is not much the vet can do to help your dog through the disease. Especially once it gets to the later stages, your dog starts having seizures and has to be put to sleep. Puppies are really susceptible to this condition because they have not had their full rounds of shots and they have weak immune systems. She said, however, that it was too early to tell and that for now we needed to treat him for upper respiratory problems. She prescribed him two medicines for an infection and an antihistamine in case it is allergies. Let me tell you, two of these medicines are pills and it is not an easy feat getting Jake to swallow them. Last night and this morning we tried peanut butter and failed miserably so tonight we are going to try sticking them in cheese.

We are also not allowed to have him around any dogs whatsoever or around any other dog's poop so we are not potty training Jake in the grass anymore, but now on a potty pad. I honestly feel bad for Jake because we completely changed his world around not going out to go potty. Yesterday was the first day with the potty pads and he definitely has pooping on them down, but urinating is a different story. He has urinated on them twice and maybe fifteen times off them. Mike and I went through a bottle of urine gone in a week and at $11 a pop, we are not pleased with this. Mike and I have had many conversations recently about watching our urine gone and paper towel usage. Let me note that Mike and I never had a problem with paper towel usage before we started this puppy adventure and certainly never talked about it.

To make matters worse, Mike discovered last night that Jake has tape worms. Our evening kind of went like this: I walk in the door from class and Mike says, "Becky, I found a worm in Jake's poop." followed by uncontrollable crying from me because I thought that finding worms in poop meant that he has heart worms. Then Laura's sister, a vet major, set me straight (HOLLA HANNAH!) and gave me a project to get Jake the medicine he needs to get over tape worms. The most frustrating part of all of this is that a stool sample was taken last week from Jake and they said that it came back clear, but now I am learning that it doesn't matter what is going on with your dog today, tomorrow can be a completely different ball game. My one prayer is that I don't come home tonight to find another puppy problem. I just want Jake to be healthy and there is nothing more bothersome in my life right now than coming home to a sick puppy.

I had plans to go to Dallas this month, but I guess it will have to wait till we get a little more sure of Jake's condition because I don't want poor Capri (Jenny's dog) to get sick, especially since she already has Addison's disease. I could use a prayer from all you readers out there that Jake's problems get sorted out within the next couple weeks and he doesn't have anything more serious.

Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-79914860000758917322010-01-29T08:35:00.001-08:002010-01-29T09:28:04.036-08:00Puppy sleeps and chewsJake Likes to Sleep.... He will sleep anywhere, everywhere, and in any position. Mike and I enjoy Jake sleeping, not only because it lets us get things done, but because he is so entertaining :) We would like to share that with you, our readers.

(More to come)

Jake is learning to chew a bone. Some people think that dogs aren't smart and don't know what is going on, but I believe that Jake knows Mike and I saved him and what we do every day just to have him with us. While he does not know all the details, I can tell he understands the 45 minutes that we spent waiting just to meet him, the $150 to adopt him, $600 on puppy supplies, $105 at the vet, and the hours of missed sleep we devote to make sure he is healthy and happy. I would trade all of that for just 3 minutes of kisses from Jake and do everyday. Anyone who has not experienced the love of a puppy, especially one like Jake, does not know this pure love that can change your perspective on life.

Jake has taken up walking in between my legs. I don't know if he feels safe there or if he is trying to play, but we struggled this morning to get around the park. I had to hold the leash out away from my body just to be able to walk without falling over myself and him. I hope this phase goes quickly, however I take this new tendency over the waking up in the middle of the night one that he did not do last night. He slept straight from 11:30pm to 6:30am when my alarm went off and woke us both up. He did pee in his crate when he woke up, but I kind of expected that. Other than that, as of 3pm today he has only had one accident in the apartment because we could not get to him fast enough after he woke up from a nap.

We met a couple more dogs and people yesterday and today. Mike met a lady who is the dog coordinator at the apartment (not an official title). She told him that the apartment doesn't care what the size dogs are, they just say they do (good for us). She also said that everyone with dogs knows each other at the apartment and they take care of each other so if we ever need someone to watch Jake, she can help us (this is good too). I have seen a guy and his dog a couple times now and he always asks how Jake is doing and if he is walking on the leash better. I like the camaraderie between people with dogs here. He has been really quiet around the apartment, playing with his toys. Most of his day he has been outside, which is good. This morning we went outside for a walk around the dog walking area. I went to sit down so he could maybe smell around, but he decided to lay down and fall asleep for 25 minutes, which to me is shocking how much this pup sleeps. He was laying between my feet like I was protecting him from everything in sight.

He met two dogs today. One was a dog like dipper, a dog that was in Columbia (Jake and Dain's dog). They use to have and another dog which I don't know what his name was. When the first dog came up, Jake just looked up at me and had that doggy face... "Pick me up"... while he was crying at me. So I scooped him up and the dog got closer. He headed up putting his head on my arm, hiding from the other dog. The second dog came along later when Becky was about to leave to go to school for the day. We went to the same place and within seconds he was out like a light, sleeping so cute against my leg. Then I saw this white dog about 15 feet from him so I picked him up and Jake started to look at me and look at the other dog like he will protect me... So piss off... lol... The other dog was a nice dog, he just wanted to play with him. I put him back down on the ground and he slept some more for about 50 minutes outside in his favorite spot. He likes the spot because it is cold, shady, and great for his furry body. Hopefully he won't overheat in the TX heat. So it is just the boys tonight for dinner and maybe I'll catch a nap.

He is sleeping now by the front door waiting for Becky to come home! He misses Becky... And I am glad that he is sleeping a little. Gives me a break from watching him. I am checking on him every 10 minutes to make sure he is not doing something bad. I trust him though.
Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-60858227265710660792010-01-26T09:54:00.001-08:002010-01-31T09:34:36.569-08:00Welcome to Puppy WorldSo last night was an adventure! Jake had some trouble going to sleep so we downloaded a heart beat from I-Tunes and played it over and over for him. That worked very well when we all went to bed at 11:30. Then we all woke up at 2am because Jake had an accident in his crate. I took him down to go to the bathroom. Then he wouldn't sleep unless I laid by his cage. I tiptoed back to bed where I got to stay until 5am when we had another accident. I cleaned him up and put him back in his crate. We then had a little bone time and fell asleep by 6am. 7am my alarm went off but I have to admit that we didn't get up till 7:45am. Mike took Jake down to go potty while I showed and got dressed and then I played with Jake while Mike got ready. Jake didn't eat very much this morning, but we think its because he is still getting over his surgery.

We took Jake to the vet and they said he is doing well, but they gave us some medicine (Clavamox) to take care of his skin irritation. We are supposed to bring him back in two weeks to keep up with his boosters. They showed us how to clip his toenails and what shampoo to use.

After we got back from the vet, Mike went to get lunch and I stayed with Jake. He crawled in his crate and laid down on his own. When Mike got back and Jake was in his crate... Mike was shocked and happy. Jake feels safe here and we couldn't be happier. He is a little trouble maker and urinates more than any creature should, but we love him and know he is going to be a fantastic dog. I hate to have to leave them tonight for class but it will make coming home that much sweeter :)
Jake Lovershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04543213833218496419noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5980519507783509817.post-49061917936941819952010-01-25T20:44:00.000-08:002010-01-31T09:32:26.097-08:00First day with puppy
We picked up Jake this evening at 6:45pm. He is a two month old s

iberian husky mix. When we first met him, he was the sweetest thing. After several trips to the SPCA over the past couple weeks, I had given up hope that we would find a puppy that both Mike and I liked. Finally, I had found him online Saturday morning and showed him to Mike. We proceeded to look up the breed and made the decision that we wanted to meet him. We got to the SPCA 45 minutes before they opened and waited outside the door for them to let us in. Finally, when they did we ran into the puppy room, beating out the 40 other people standing outside, and took him out immediately. We knew within 10 minutes that he was the one. Tonight they made us wait for him outside for a very long time, which made me very worried. I was scared that maybe his neutering and hernia surgery went horribly wrong. Sometimes dogs have genetic hernias which can be easily fixed without future problems. I sat there with visions of the SPCA people coming out and telling me we would not be taking Jake home. All my hopes and dreams of this puppy were floating around in the air pulling on my heart strings. Low and behold though, they appeared with him as cute as can be. We brought him home and immediately started entertaining his constant need for attention and love.

He had one accident on the floor but we quickly got that taken care of... No biggie... Mike was such a trooper as I kept interupting the Mizzou/ KU basketball game to come downstairs with me and walk him. At first he was scared of the grass and fell down every single short stair on our walk but by the end of the night, he was smooth sailing. He is a fast learner. Mike and I proceeded to run him around the complex with the hopes that he would tire and we would be able to have some down time. Our plan worked like a charm!

We will see how sleeping tonight goes.
